Garage Transformation

The garage is said to be the largest yet most underutilized place in our homes. To often is it a place where things are thrown into it like a storage shed, and we rarely even park our cars there anymore. But, it doesn’t have to stay that way. Here are some things you can do to turn that wasted space, into usable space.

Get organized

First things first; before we can use the space, we need to organize the space. Take some time and think about what kind of storage options you would like to utilize. There are plenty of options out there; from simple plastic containers, to all wood or metal custom storage units. You can decide to go with open racks, or closed cabinets. However, before making your decision, I would recommend first your go through your things and get rid of unwanted items with a garage sale, or even just donation. Afterwards, divide what you have left into piles (i.e.: tools, craft material, xmas decor, etc.), then decide which storage system will best suite your needs.

Conquer and divide

Now that you’ve conquered the initial organization of your items and determined your preferred method of storage, it’s time to decide how you want to divide the space. An easy way to do this is to make each wall its own zone. Since you’ll probably be using the space in multiple ways, one wall might be tools and work bench. Another wall might be hobbies and crafts, and so forth. Also, don’t forget about the rafters. By placing something as simple as plywood on top of the rafters (if their open), you can easily have a place to store all that seasonal stuff that would otherwise just be taking up space.

Get Cozy

If you’re planning on spending a lot of time in the garage, you might as well make it a bit inviting. Add some drywall, paint the walls, and put some epoxy or polyvinyl paint on the floors to make it look like more of a place you don’t mind hanging out rather than just a simple garage. Words of warning though, don’t go to over board. The space still is just a garage after all no matter how much you improve it.
